Previously, it was natural threats to the safety of tall buildings—earthquakes, hurricanes, and the relentless force of the wind—that had driven structural engineering codes. But with the threat of terrorism, determined attackers have targeted even the most secure structures, forcing engineers and architects to consider what was once unimaginable.

In the months after 9/11, NOVA followed a team of engineers tasked by FEMA to study the Twin Towers' collapse. Preliminary conclusions originally reported in "Why the Towers Fell" determined that the floors of the buildings may have "pancaked" down upon one another as their trusses failed. Now, with the benefit of years of additional investigation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has revealed that no structural element was to blame for the buildings' collapse.

Using vivid computer animations, NOVA takes viewers through a simulation of what the buildings endured in the 9/11 attacks. It turns out that fireproofing on the floor trusses was blown off by the impact of the jets, exposing the trusses to severe fire temperature. This caused the trusses to bow and eventually break the buildings' supporting columns, which then triggered the immediate collapse of the buildings. (See an audio slide show narrated by the chief NIST investigator.)

Forensic engineer Eugene Corley also details the chilling results of another critical engineering investigation, that of the bombing and destruction of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Unlike the World Trade Center towers, which stood for 56 minutes (South Tower) and one hour 42 minutes (North Tower), the Murrah Building crumbled in a mere three seconds. In this worst-case scenario, known as a progressive collapse, there was simply no time for anyone to escape.

By standing as long as they did, the Twin Towers gave most people a chance to escape. (Hear one survivor's remarkable tale of escape from high in the South Tower.) So structurally they were very sound. But their ultimate collapse revealed fatal weaknesses that many tall buildings share. These include stairways that are too few and too narrow to accommodate crowds of evacuees, fireproofing materials that are easily dislodged and could leave steel exposed to dangerous levels of heat, and insufficient means by which firemen and other First Responders can reach the upper floors of a building in an emergency.

These issues and more have been addressed by NIST in a comprehensive report that recommends 30 safety revisions to American building codes. But as NOVA learns, these recommendations are not without controversy among builders or even among those in the emergency planning community. Code changes often come with significant added costs, swift evacuations of giant structures may not be possible, and the probability of future terrorism is difficult to quantify. Most experts concede that protecting buildings from airplane attacks like those that took down the Twin Towers is simply not practical. But many improvements can be made to a building's design, structural integrity, and evacuation systems that would better protect it from major fire or even some terrorist threats, and NOVA details the ways this can be done.

"Building on Ground Zero" takes viewers to two structures that exemplify bold advances in skyscraper safety and construction. In New York City, World Trade Center 7 has risen from the ashes as one of America's safest and "greenest" tall buildings. And in China, NOVA gets a tour from Leslie Robertson as he guides the construction of Shanghai's new World Financial Center, which upon completion will be the tallest building in the world. Exclusive footage shows off the skyscraper's massive structural shell, "refuge floors" with extra fire protection, and additional elevators designed for use by emergency personnel. While Robertson is relieved that the NIST investigation found no flaw in his engineering of the World Trade Center, the horror of what happened to the Towers still haunts him to this day. In Shanghai, he is doing what many argue we all must do: take the lessons from Ground Zero, endorse innovation, and continue to reach for the sky.

This program won the Beijing International Science Film Festival Silver Award, and earned Discovery’s second-highest, weeknight rating for 2002. After the success of this program, Discovery commissioned Powderhouse to produce the first season of the 10-part series, Extreme Engineering, whose episodes were written by Alan Lindgren, Ed Fields and several other Powderhouse writer-producers. Like Engineering the Impossible, the first season of Extreme Engineering focused on extreme projects of the future. Season 2 (and all seasons since) featured projects already in construction around the world.

While watching The Planets, be prepared to fight your way past all kinds of computer animation which makes Walking with Dinosaurs seem like the last word in realism. It seems that no solar or planetary event which ever happened (or which may or may not have happened) is worthy of mention here without recourse to lovingly detailed shots of implausible-looking collisions and explosions. These come complete with sound effects, despite the fact that there is no sound in the vacuum of space, and are enhanced by a range of colours, some of which are visible only to bees. Somehow Patrick Moore’s The Sky at Night manages to convey just as much excitement with little more than a couple of diagrams and the presenter’s hyperactive enthusiasm. Fortunately, this two-DVD set is redeemed by both its subject matter and its sheer scope, offering all eight 50-minute episodes of the 1999 documentary series covering the history of the solar system and humanity’s age-old desire to learn its secrets. Episode 1 – Different Worlds

Cosmos: A Personal Voyage is a thirteen-part television series written by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan, and Steven Soter, with Sagan as global presenter. It was executive-produced by Adrian Malone, produced by David Kennard, Geoffrey Haines-Stiles and Gregory Andorfer, and directed by the producers and David Oyster, Richard Wells, Tom Weidlinger, and others. It covered a wide range of scientific subjects including the origin of life and a perspective of our place in the universe.

The series was first broadcast by the Public Broadcasting Service in 1980, and was the most widely watched series in the history of American public television until 1990’s The Civil War. It is still the most widely watched PBS series in the world.[1] It won an Emmy and a Peabody Award and has since been broadcast in more than 60 countries and seen by over 600 million people, according to the Science Channel. Recoil - Recoil is now applied to every weapon that fires in DoD. When in duck\prone, your recoil will be reduced.

MG Classes - The mg42\30 cal is the only weapon you get when you choose this class. When firing the weapon without its tripod\bipod down your accuracy and stamina is aweful. To place your bipod\tripod down, you must go prone. Once prone, hit your SECONDARY fire button (2nd mouse button), the tripod will go down. Your accuracy will be greatly improved. Your views are limited while your tripod\bipod is down. You cannot get up, or move until your bipod\tripod is brought back up (Secondary fire button again). You only get 2 belts of ammo, so shoot wisely, light inf. carries 1 belt of ammo for mger, they can run them to you. You can only reload when prone and tripod\bipod is down. Also new entity for mappers, a sand bag placement, so you can place your bipod\tripod down while standing up, as long as you are behind the sand bag entity.

Prone System - The views do not go all the way down, I am aware of this, valve will help me fix this before release. Once down, your view will sway back and forth while moving, once stopped your view slowly resets to center screen. You can not fire while moving in prone.

Movement System - New movement system. 2 new movement types, jog (default) and sprint (shift key). Hold down the shift key to get a quick burst of running speed, will drain stamina.

New Scoped Kar - replaces the gewehr sniper rifle. Same firing as spring, single shot reload.

New Spade - All germans, cept sniper, get the spade (shovel), replaces the youth knife.

New Sound System - Just the start of our new sound system, everything is heard by others, from breathing, to jiggling of pack and equipment while moving and jumping.

New Effects System - Not finished, so far we have the new shrapnel system in. When explosions go off tiny bits of shrapnel shoot out with smoke effects which follow it as it bounces around.

New Sniper System - When zooming in, your screen fades into the scope to represent your eyes settling into the scope, when you move you come out of the scope. Scope stays zoomed in for a second after shot, to let you see how your shot was.

New Animation System - New death animations, new jog\walk\crouch animations, new getup\get down prone animations, new mg42 bipod out\in animations, new hand signal animations (ties into the voice commands, and also can be done by themselves for silent times). When zooming in with Sniper rifles, your player actually does a zoomin animation.

New Hud - All colored, better functionality for map goals, objective timers, objective status, and reinforcement timer.

New file\directory system - All files in lower case lettering, deleted lots of unused files, redid the paths for directories to clean up our structure. NO UPPERCASE FILES !!!

New Objectives System - Mugsy will write up a file that helps better explain how to use this system for mappers.

New Fog System - 2 versions, the Valve version of OpenGL, and then the plain OpenGL version. cl_fog (1 = opengl, 2 = valve). You can set the color of it with (cl_fog_red, cl_fog_green, cl_fog_blue) give those a RGB value, default is 192 for each (grey). cl_fog_start is used to show where the fog starts in relation to your view point, cl_fog_end is the ending point for it in relation to your view as well.

It was released on 12 March 2002.[2] The game requires the player to build buildings and create units in order to defeat the enemy, whilst sending their hero on optional quests.[1]

The game is set within the world of Etheria. In the campaign the player must take control of one of the twelve races and capture all sixty-seven regions of the land in a non-linear manner. The player does this whilst assuming the role of a "Hero" which he or she has created. There are twelve different playable races, each with their own type of Hero, buildings and resource dependencies.[1]

The game was well-received by critics and users alike,[2] with an average score of 82/100 on Metacritic.[3] Warlords Battlecry III, the sequel to the game, was released in 2004.

This documentary gives 'hackers' attending a conference the opportunity to publicly discuss their views on what being a hacker means to them, what their motivations are for being involved, and views on things like gender and the representation of hackers in the press. It presents these views through interview clips with a selection of the participants, with music in the background and appropriate computer sound effects (such as the sound of typing). There is no narrative, or any particularly chronological or theme based ordering to the documentary.

Such a format relies on the quality of the information supplied by interviewees. So it is a real problem then, that although most of the people interviewed were undoubtedly intelligent, none of them really stood out as saying anything particularly profound or memorable. In fact, I got annoyed hearing about how intelligent hackers are(is that really so?) and that everyone who has ever invented anything is a 'hacker'. If this is true, then why use the word inventor? Can you really call the inventor of the wheel a hacker? I won't dwell further on the idea of the 'hacker community' either. Like any other community, it loves to love itself in a way which makes outsiders a bit uncomfortable.

The documentary also failed to give any real examples of the work that these hackers do. Some of us may have heard of Englishman Gary McKinnon's hacking of sensitive US government computers searching for information about UFOs. Now for me, this is potentially very interesting: how did he do it, what did he find out? But the only example I can remember - having just watched it - of hacking, is someone making some small lights flash under a skirt using LEDs. Not terribly exciting in my opinion. If you're going to make a technology related documentary, please give some technological examples, and not just clips of people pulling hard disk drive cables out of ancient PCs, and self-described hackers playing with Christmas tree lights.

Perhaps what would have made this more interesting, is if it had interviewed a wider range of 'hackers'. Maybe the ones going to big conventions and wearing T-Shirts proudly stating "I am a hacker" are the wrong ones to interview. Perhaps not all hackers go to Defcon in the USA - maybe some even come from non-English speaking countries. Maybe they do more than dwell on how clever they all are. Maybe they apply hacking to a certain field of activity or subject, for example social movements, fighting against Digital Rights Management, Peer-to-Peer, selling solutions to business, applying lessons to pure science. Who knows? You certainly won't find it out here
